世界旅遊日是由世界旅遊組織創立的，是爲了普及旅遊理念，闡明旅遊的作用和意義，促進世界旅遊業的發展。世界旅遊組織從1980年起每年都爲世界旅遊日確定一個主題，各國旅遊組織根據每年主題和要求開展活動。中國於1983年正式成爲世界旅遊組織成員。

80年代

1980年：旅遊業的貢獻：文化遺產的保護與不同文化之間的相互理解。(Tourism's contribution to the preservation of culturalheritage and to peace and mutual understanding.)

1981年：旅遊業與生活質量。(Tourism and the quality of life.)

1982年：旅遊業的驕傲：好的客人與好的主人。(Pride in travel: good guests and good hosts.)

1983年：旅遊和假日對每個人來說既是權利也是責任。(Travel and holidays are a right but also a responsibility forall.)

1984年：爲了國際間的理解、和平與合作的旅遊。(Tourism for international understanding, peace andcooperation.)

世界旅遊日 (World Tourism Day)，是由世界旅遊組織確定的旅遊工作者和旅遊者的節日。1970年國際官方旅遊聯盟(世界旅遊組織的前身)在墨西哥城召開的特別代表大會上通過了成立世界旅遊組織的章程。1979年9月，世界旅遊組織第三次代表大會正式將9月27日定爲世界旅遊日。選定這一天爲世界旅遊日，一是因爲世界旅遊組織的前身“國際官方旅遊聯盟”於1970年的這一天在墨西哥城的特別代表大會上通過了世界旅遊組織的章程。此外，這一天又恰好是北半球的旅遊高峯剛過去，南半球的旅遊旺季剛到來的相互交接時間。
