開始，他們在地面上行走，走了走，一切正常，還可吃着穀子。
當來到池塘邊時，青蛙把老鼠帶到了水裏，他自己在水裏嬉戲玩耍，高興得呱呱叫。可憐的老鼠卻被水灌飽，淹死了。
不久，老鼠浮出水面，但他的腳仍和青蛙綁在一起。
鷂子飛過這裏，看見了老鼠，衝向水中，把他抓了起來，青蛙跟着被提出了水面，也成了鷂子的美食。

A MOUSE who always lived on the land, by an unlucky chance formed an intimate acquaintance with a Frog, who lived for the most part in the water.
The Frog, one day intent on mischief, bound the foot of the Mouse tightly to his own.
Thus joined together, the Frog first of all led his friend the Mouse to the meadow where they were accustomed to find their food.
After this, he gradually led him towards the pool in which he lived, until reaching the very brink, he suddenly jumped in, dragging the Mouse with him. The Frog enjoyed the water amazingly, and swam croaking about, as if he had done a good deed.
The unhappy Mouse was soon suffocated by the water, and his dead body floated about on the surface, tied to the foot of the Frog.
A Hawk observed it, and, pouncing upon it with his talons, carried it aloft.
The Frog, being still fastened to the leg of the Mouse, was also carried off a prisoner, and was eaten by the Hawk.

故事裏老鼠和青蛙的關係是不正確的，本來兩者就不是生活在同一環境下的生物，所以青蛙強行把老鼠綁在腿上，只會導致對方的不幸而已，最後青蛙自己也被這段不正確的關係給連累了。
這個故事告訴我們：與別人關係太親密，在災難降臨時，往往會受到牽連。
